Good News about GMFU Constitution Amendments

The push-back on the part of both MacEwan University Sessional Faculty (MUSF) and MacEwan University Continuing Faculty (MUCF) has resulted in the revision of the amendments for 2.3 and 12.1 of the GMUFA Constitution concerning the status of Special Meetings for changes to the GMUFA Constitution. The wording of the amendments now reinstates these meetings as mandatory. Bravo to everyone who participated in this push-back!

While 12.2 has not been changed, the Bylaws are subordinate to the Constitution, so — until a draft of the fully revamped and consolidated version of the Constitution and Bylaws is sent out later this semester — we do not have to concern ourselves with this matter.

MUSSC nonetheless encourages MUSF to review the revised amendments carefully, to consider attending one of the Information Meetings (one of which is today), and especially to commit to attending the Special Meeting at which the vote on the amendments will take place. We MUSF have to continue to make ourselves seen and heard!

Information Meetings on the Amendments:

  • Wednesday, February 7, 1:00 to 2:00 PM, Room 7-185
  • Friday, February 16, 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, Room 9-207

Special Meeting for the Vote on the Amendments:

  • Monday, March 5, 12:00 to 1:00 PM, Room 9-323

Concerns about CAUT Defense Fund

  1. During the first year of membership, a union is required to pay a $30 initiation fee for every duespaying member in its bargaining unit or units. The initiation fee is reduced to $20 for unions which join the Fund within one year of becoming certified. Such initiation fees can be paid out all at once or in monthly installments over the first year of membership.
  2. Each faculty union also pays monthly dues which are set annually based on a formula using December 1st membership numbers and any pro-rating of part-time, contract, or other types of members. The level of dues is changed from time to time by the Board of Trustees. It is currently set at $5.50 per person per month (nontaxable). MUSF must find out how the

MUSF must find out how the CAUT Defense Fund would affect them—both if their year-round GMUFA membership is maintained, and especially if it is not. They almost certainly would not be willing to pay for a Fund that would not support them in a strike or a lockout, and thus would vote “no” on the question about whether to apply to the Fund.
