MacEwan Sessionals: Come out for change!

Dear Colleagues, Two things we can do this coming month to encourage change: First of all, we should urge as many sessionals as possible to attend the General Membership Meeting of the Faculty Association on Tuesday November 1, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM in room 9-323.  Even if you cannot attend the entire meeting, please come for whatever time you have available. A good showing by our group, which makes up the majority of members, will help focus the association on our goals. After that, we should make sure that all of us respond to the Faculty Association survey, which should come out soon. This will help the association prepare for upcoming negotiations. Please spread the word to all of the sessionals you know. Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that the Faculty of Arts and Science had to hold an election to choose from among the 23 sessionals who volunteered for 18 council positions. Several people had expressed concern about sessional interest, so I was glad to see this outpouring of interest by people with already busy schedules. If we all do a little, we can change a lot. We are not alone. The Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) features “The Precarious Life of Contract Academic Staff” and a President’s Message, “Make it Fair for Contract Staff” in the October issue of its Bulletin . You can read both of these concise articles at: I am glad that sessionals continue to share their ideas and concerns with me at Faculty Association meetings or by email: . In solidarity, Marco
